Change of plans for blog

Due to the low views, I will only post standings after each round. And then follow post each game during the post season.

Braves lose again

Image
At Fulton County Stadium, the 95 Braves lost again..this time to the 34 Tigers 3-1. Tommy Bridges just outdueled Tom Glavine and the Tigers scored all in the early innings.

Giants win in extra innings..

Image
At Sportsman Park, it took extra innings for the 1962 San Francisco Giants to win against the 1922 St. Louis Browns 4-2. Good pitcher's duel up till the 11th inning then SF pulled away with the win.

1906 Cubs win in Canada..

Image
In Toronto at SkyDome, the 1906 Cubs hang on to win against the 1992 Blue Jays 3-2 in 10 innings. Frank Chance won in with a double in the 10th for the Cubbies. Jack Pfiester pitched well enough for the win with 9 k's. Blue Jays' Jimmy Key pitched well to with 9 k's but it wasn't enough as relief pitching lost it.

A's win in Denver..

Image
At Coors Field in Denver, the 1911 A's overcame a late rally from the 2007 Rockies to win 9-7. Philly was hitting on all cylinders until the relief pitching came in for Plank in the 7th inning. But the A's held on to win improving to 2-0, while Colorado drops to 0-2.

STANDINGS AFTER ROUND 1

2004 Red Sox outlast 77 Dodgers @ThePeskyPole6 @gehrig38

Image
At Fenway Park, the 2004 Red Sox defeated the 1977 Dodgers 6-4. Both teams came out of the gates swinging and both pitchers struggled. Tommy John and Curt Schilling (@gehrig38) both didn't have much command early on but finally settled in. Kevin Millar went 4-4 while Schilling struck out 8. Keith Foulke had the save. The 2004 Red Sox pick for this league was a nod to fellow OOTP gamer and big Red Sox fan, (and Twitter follower) @ThePeskyPole6 for his suggestion of a Red Sox team. I had been wanting to use the 04 Sox, so that was for him. It'll be interesting to see how they do. Anyone has any more suggestions for the next league, give them to me. Thanks.

Yankees win in extra innings..

Image
In another 1 run game, the 1939 Yankees eke out a win over the 1988 Mets 3-2 in 11 innings. Both starting pitchers had 11 k's but gave up too many hits to make this close. Finally Charlie Keller put an end to it with his single that won it for the Bronx Bombers. The 1939 Yankees are #1 on the ELO chart so it'll be interesting to see how they do.

Battle By the Bay

Image
At Candlestick Park, the 1972 Oakland A's came back late to beat the 1962 San Francisco Giants 3-2. Gene Tenace won it for the A's with a solo HR in the 8th. Reggie Jackson added an RBI in the game. Catfish Hunter won it with 8 k's. Rollie Fingers got the save.

Strong pitching leads Dodgers

Image
At Ebbets Field, the 1942 Brooklyn Dodgers slipped past the 1982 Milwaukee Brewers 3-2 behind a strong pitching performance from Whit Wyatt. He struck out 10 Brewers through 8 innings. Vuckovich took the loss for Milwaukee.

Colorado Almost Spoils Rowe's Good Day

Image
At Navin Field in Detroit, Schoolboy Rowe mowed down 18 Rockies through 9 innings to win 3-2. Colorado tried to come back in the 8th with a inside the park HR from Matt Holliday but were shut down in the 9th. Jeff Francis pitched respectable in a losing effort for the Rockies.

Walter Johnson shuts down 95 Braves

Image
At Griffith Stadium, Walter Johnson pitched a 4 hitter and had 12 strikeouts as the 1925 Washington Senators beat the 1995 Atlanta Braves 3-0. Besides Johnson's great pitching, Ossie Bluege for the Senators had a solo HR and went 2-4. Johnson himself went 2-4 driving in a run. Atlanta had no answer for one of the game's greatest pitchers and Greg Maddux was completely out pitched.

My dad's 2 picks..

Image
My dad suggested the 1958 Yankees and 1946 Cardinals....but I used the 42 Cards since they were higher on the Elo ratings. He's a big Yankee fan. So at Sportsman Park, the 58 Yankees come back to defeat the 42 Cards 5-4. Great pitching from Mort Cooper kept the Yankees virtually hitless until the 6th inning when Hank Bauer crushed a 3 run bomb to put the Yankees up 4-3. The 1958 squad never looked back and finally won with a save from Bobby Shantz. I get a feeling both of these teams will be contenders in this league.

92 Blue Jays vs 1909 Pirates

Image
It's the World Series champs 92 Blue Jays from Canada taking on Honus Wagner's World Series 1909 Pirates at Forbes Field. A pitcher's duel ensued early on between Toronto's Jack Morris and Pittsburgh Howie Camnitz. Pirates scored on in the 5th off a triple by Bobby Byrnes. The Jays still had a chance to get into it, but Camnitz shut them down. A couple of doubles as insurance runs in the 7th, sealed the deal for Pittsburgh. Oh..forgot to mention. We're using the year 1947 to play this league.

Some things I forgot in my intro..

Image
The historical leagues I play are as accurate as I can make them. As in correct ballparks of the particular team, pics of the players, weather conditions, ballpark factors etc. If I use FaceGen, which I haven't since the 1st league, accurate uniforms, caps and FaceGens. But I like using pics, giving me that Stratomatic feel. As I said, I pick teams that had success in the post season or regular season. For example in the last league, I used the 2001 Mariners. (Didn't do so well). First league, I used the 94 Expos who did really well. So it all depends. I do take suggestions for teams to use. My radio buddy last year gave me 2 great suggestions- 75 Red Sox and 63 Dodgers who both did really well in the season but faltered at the end. I bought OOTP in 2014 after play Strat since 1989. Instantly loved it and they don't charge for every freaking team in baseball history! I spent over $500 on Stratomatic in a few years (online game). At about $20/per team it would cost over ...

Welcome

Image
Hello and welcome to my new blog on my latest OOTP leagues. I usually do historical leagues usually of teams from different eras like I use to do in Stratomatic. Let me discuss the format I use for these leagues. It's a 24 team league that plays 16 games. 16 because I play each game out myself.  That's 384 games played over usually the course of 6 months.  I pick teams that go back as far as 1893. 1893 was where the modern pitcher's mound came into use. Baseball was different in the 1870's and 1880's so there's no point in simming teams that didn't play in the "modern"' way. I pick 2 teams from 1900 through 2000's. One from 1890's and one from 2010's. I usually try to pick teams that had success as in World Series, league winners, etc..I schedule the games each round. Here's the format I use: Then in the end of the season, I don't use wild cards etc. Only teams that qualify are out right winners of the division or if...
